one, two, three, four, FIVE

adam had his five months birthday yesterday. where has the time gone? five months ago. i still feel like time has been both long and short at the same time. the words five months sound so brief, but the time that has passed seems like forever. probably because we're all such different people than we were on september 13.

little adam, at five months you...

-amaze me everyday, of course! you are generally the happiest person that i know. you smile almost constantly, are happy to go anywhere and be with anyone. you hang out and play, or you love looking at things when we're on the go. just today, you and i went to target for WAY too long (sorry about that, but you loved looking at everything and watching all the new people), we went to a restaurant and waited in line to pick up lunch, we went to the base and met daddy for lunch. he loved seeing you and you loved seeing him too, smiling and giggling at him all the time. you light up when you see his face and it makes me so happy-- him too!-- to see. after that, we went to the commissary and then home, where you played in your new high chair and i put away all our groceries and target purchases. you then ate carrots and rice for dinner and are now taking a nap. and.... the REASON i am telling you all this-- you did not cry a tear or fuss during any of our escapades all day! you were just basically happy to be alive, entertained by all the new things to see-- ok, and by the toys i packed for you to play with while were were out. you are such a happy baby and bring us so much joy. i know that might sound cliche, but really, your dad and i are totally head over heels in love with you. when your dad is home, we come in your room to look at you sleeping at least three times a night just because we think you are so handsome and cute. we want to pick you up and squeeze you and kiss you, but you're asleep so we wait until morning. this week, you were already asleep one night when i came home from work and so i came in your room to see you sleeping. you had your binky in your mouth as you slept, and i leaned over and kissed you on your forehead. and behind your binky, in your sleep, you smiled. you melted my heart! i will never forget that, ever.

-eat rice cereal, carrots, sweet potatoes, peas and bananas. this weekend i hope to work in pears, just so you have another fruit to add to the mix. i have been making your food myself. however, at school you do eat jarred food. but, it does make me happy that i can make you and feed you fresh foods here at home. this weekend, the highchair i ordered for you arrived and you sit in it nicely. i loved the design and it folds almost totally flat, which is why i got it. you've eaten a couple meals there already with flying colors. daddy is gonna be so happy to see that you have a real place to eat-- other than our laps-- when he gets home. you LOVE food, adam. you cry almost every time your bottles are over and you sometimes start to cry in between bites of food if you feel we're not getting it to you fast enough. (i see you have your mom's patience. darn, i was really hoping you'd get your dad's....) you haven't met a food you don't like yet, so i hope this is a good omen of things to come-- a healthy, happy eater. you're down to four or five bottles a day and a couple real foods per day. i know you love the real food a lot, so i have to be careful not to let it eek out your bottles just yet! you're still too young, sir!

-taste any and everything that will fit in your hands. just this week, i had you in your bumbo seat near a plant of mine. a plant you never paid interest in... until now. i watched you, in mere seconds, reach over, grab the plant, pull with all your might until it broke, and start to put it in your mouth. luckily i stopped you, but i also learned that you are getting more and more curious with each day that passes. i think our days of plopping you somewhere and not having to worry too much are ending soon. this morning, as you played on your belly and i made a grocery list, i watched you squirm and turn in a circle to get another toy on your blanket. you lift your chest completely off the floor with your arms straight, but have yet to figure out that your legs need to get in on the action. you're not rocking on your hands and knees, but i know you will soon... you're too curious to stay in one spot for much longer.

-sit! you started sitting on your own a little after your four-month birthday and each day you get better and better. you still mostly sit like a frog/gorilla with your hands either on the floor in front of you or on your lap. but sometimes you get brave and let go, reaching for a toy. i know your teacher at school lets you sit up a lot and so do we at home. you like being up where you can see everything. you also like to be propped up on the couch or chair with a toy so you can watch us, otis and everything going on around you.

-laugh! this is a very new addition, but really cracks us up. you have the funniest, cutest laugh and we've had the opportunity to record it a couple times.

-babble almost constantly. mostly, you say ahhhh, oooh. sometimes it sounds like uh-oh. you change pitch and length of syllables and blow bubbles and make fart sounds with your mouth often too. you also squeal in high pitches, and if someone does it to you, you'll respond with a squeal of your own, back and forth. we do our best to talk to you often, and you almost always reply with your own language of baby talk. just last night, though, something very exciting happened. as i was undressing you for your bath, you looked up at me and said, b-b-b-b. almost like ba-ba but the vowel was so short-lived i wouldn't even go so far as to say you said bah. anyhow, i was just so happy because other than uh-gah, this was the first time i'd heard you say a consonant other than g. i repeated b-b-b-b to you, and you said it again! you excited me so much i started saying all the words i could think of that start with b. binky, baby, banana, bootie! you haven't done it since, but i was sooooooo excited to hear that! you are growing and changing everyday, and it is so neat to see you learning about the world-- from even the smallest of things, like how to place your lips and make sounds that sound like what your mommy and daddy say. amazing.

-still sleep 10-12 hours at night, thank you thank you thank you. your daddy and i are going to have to have another baby soon because soon we'll be too old to have the energy required to handle the colicky baby that's SURE to follow the easy baby you've been. you make us feel so lucky. you also nap (USUALLY) twice a day, once in the morning after you've been up for a couple hours, and then again in the early evening around 5. we still are religious about our bedtime routine, and we feel that's helped you be the sleep champ you are. you love your bath and kick and splash in it every night. you're almost too big for your baby bathtub and soon we'll need to move on to the big bath. you were like a tiny little peanut in that thing just a couple months ago!

-are a BIG boy. you are bigger than all the other five month old babies in your class at school. you wear 9 month clothes, mostly. i just ordered you a TON of new clothes from Gap and bought 6-12 mos size. adam, they JUST fit-- i'll be ordering new clothes in a month, i know it! this week, i went through all your drawers and closet and took out the clothes that were too small. they filled a giant trash bag. it was sad for me to see that pile of clothes-- some things you only wore once, things that seemed to just fit you perfectly YESTERDAY. you have grown and changed so much in such a short time... when you were born, someone bought you a 9month footsie-jammies from carters that's for winter time. i remember thinking that you'd be 9 months in june and ALMOST returned it for a smaller size. who knew you'd wear 9 mos size from carters in FEBRUARY? when you were born, your daddy bought you a coast guard tee shirt from headquarters downtown. we were bummed at time because the smallest size they had was 1-year. my sweet little adam, you wore this shirt last week. LAST WEEK. fits you to a tee. and, today, you're wearing a redskins shirt that dan had as a baby. the tag says 18 mos but you fit it wonderfully. enough said.

-LOVE television. i only know this because anytime we're walking through a room or you happen to catch a glance, you're transfixed. i'm certain it's because of all the colors and sounds, but we don't like to let you watch it. we always try to prop you so that you can't see it and lately we've turned it off all together often, opting to listen to music instead. you LOVE music too, much to our relief. it seems to calm you, and you bounce in your exersaucer while it plays.

happy five months, baby boy! and happy valentine's day. you're my date tonight, since daddy has to work. we'll (you'll) be having a lovely meal of pureed carrots followed by enfamil for dessert and a snoozefest around 8pm. sounds perfect! i love you!!!!!!

(took this photo today, having lunch with daddy at his work. happy valentine's day to both my valentines!)
