adam has inherited sleep habits from both eric and me.
from eric, he got waking up happy. he wakes up in the morning and within minutes has a giant smile on his face, ready to play and hang out, talk and see the world. i, on the other hand, wake up like a troll. i can't talk to anyone coherently or pleasantly before at least two cups of coffee. i then drink coffee until lunch.
so yeah, he got his wake ups from his dad.
and he got his heavy sleep from his dad too. i am an insomniac. i haven't been able to sleep well since i was a teenager. i haven't been able to fall asleep without reading since around that same time. even in college (and ok, once or twice in the years since...) i have come in at 3am with several of the night's beverages coursing through me, and read several pages before turning out the light. i have to. but eric? if he's horizontal and warm, he can sleep. and alllllll night. sitting up on the couch? no problem. in the car? not an issue. adam has slept the night through since he was 8 weeks old, sleeps like a rock. like his dad. once he's out, we can put him in the carseat and take him almost anywhere with no issue.
also, from the beginning, adam preferred sleeping on his belly. i know lots of babies like belly-sleeping, but it was the ONLY way adam would BE, period. bathtime? we held him over our forearms on his belly to be washed. diaper changes? he screamed the entire time. getting dressed? an unpleasant experience for all involved. he's since gotten over it and can sleep on his back or belly, bathes on his back in the tub like a normal human, and loves smiling and blowing bubbles while we wipe his hiney and dress him. but, he still PREFERS to sleep on his belly. and he definitely got this from eric. eric rolls over to his belly every night and, in bed, cannot sleep any other way. he simply can't.
but from me, mommy, he got...
he cries when he is tired. he rubs his eyes. since i've noticed him doing this, i've also noticed myself doing it. since most days i am wearing makeup, i sometimes divert to rubbing my forehead. but i definitely rub my eyes or head when sleepy. and i whine. i do.
when on his back, he sleeps with his feet together and knees apart. i sleep this way sometimes and especially did when i was pregnant with adam. it's a yoga pose, actually, called supta badha konasana or reclining bound angle pose. given that i slept this way when pregnant, and all the yoga i practiced while pregnant, i'd say he got this from me.
and though he wakes up happy, it takes a moment to get there. before the smile and happiness, he rubs eyes, rocks head from side to side and grunts and snorts. i would guess i make these same noises, and definitely take a few minutes to figure out that i'm coming out of sleep and back into the real world.
